After watching these movies, it seems that the condition of peasants was very miserable during the British rule. They were supposed to pay more than half of their produce as land revenue (Lagaan) to the British. The Zamindars were very oppressive who exploited the peasants in many ways. The peasants were left with meager produce and often remained starved. The state and Zamindars were the owners of land. There was no help from the government at the time of crop failure and there was no investment in agriculture.

Today, the condition of peasants is totally different. They do not produce any land tax and are owners of land as well. But they also do not get the supposed price of their commodities and that is why the peasants sink into debts.

In present day, if there is a crop[ failure, the government provides help to farmers. Besides the government heavily invests in agriculture and for the welfare of peasants.
