Fermentation is an anaerobic process, meaning it doesn’t use oxygen. It occurs in the cytoplasm. Its purpose is to replenish the supply of NAD+ by oxidizing NADH. This enables glycolysis to keep working. There are many different kinds of fermentation pathways, but the main ones are alcohol fermentation and lactic acid fermentation.

Lactic acid fermentation converts the pyruvate into lactic acid.

Alcohol fermentation converts the pyruvate into ethyl alcohol and a carbon dioxide.

Lactic acid fermentation. Yeast strains and bacteria convert starches or sugars into lactic acid, requiring no heat in preparation. ...

Ethanol fermentation/alcohol fermentation. ...

Acetic acid fermentation.A fermenter is an enclosed and sterilised vessel that maintains optimal conditions for the growth of a microorganism. The microorganism undergoes fermentation to produce large quantities of a desired metabolite for commercial use.
