Water accumulates in the cells of animals and plants due to the presence of cell membrane.

  • The cell membrane is the outermost covering of an animal cell and penultimate covering of a plant cell, present behind the cell wall.
  • The membrane is semi-permeable; it allows only certain substances to move from one side to another. Water moves across the membrane into the cytoplasm of the cell by osmosis.
  • Osmosis is the process of transport of water molecules from a region of their higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
  • Since the cytoplasm contains a lower concentration of pure water, endosmosis occurs and water gets accumulated in the cell.
  • The cell is now said to be turgid.
