They should be conserved because they are an important source of water. The support life and without them life would not be possible.

Water bodies are lifelines for all human beings. Therefore, they must be conserved because it all the living things needs water, not only the humans. It may be renewable, but it must be conserved because excess usage of water may limit the availability of the ground water. Also, stagnant water and the one which is contaminated reduces the amount of fresh water in the surface of the earth.
The factors leading to deterioration are,
1. Stagnation of water,
2. Contamination,
3. Use of excessive fertilizers,
4. Leakage of waste,
etc...
