water can hydrolyse only one out of ccl4 and sicl4 which one of the two is hydrolysed? write down the hydrolysis reaction and name the main product formed explain why it is possible in one case and not in the other

CCl4 is hydrolysed because of following reasons. Carbon is smaller in size. Absence of d-orbitals in Carbon. Thus it difficult for carbon to expand its valency or coordination number. CCl4 + H2O → No hydrolysis Where as in SiCl4there available 3d-orbitals will makes possible for the hydrolysis of SiCl4. More over Silcion has comparatively higher atomcic size compared to Carbon. SiCl4 + 4H2O → Si(OH)4 + 4HCl
