Water is pulled into the sponge via internal choanocyte cells, which take inwater through the sponge's outer pores. The choanocytes line the inner spongocoel, or body cavity. And, using their specialized epithelial cells, sponges can absorb and excrete gases and nutrients in a very simple, but effective, body plan.
