Water clocks have a container for water and some kind of measuring device. These “devices” can be as simple as markings on the container, or as complicated as floating pointers and scaled rulers. The key is that, as water flows out, the flow does not remain constant, so the shape of the vessel or the spacing of the markings has to change as the water level gets lower. The attached image is one of Ctesibius’s designs. I should also note that these ‘clocks’ only correspond to the time of day if the amount of water and rate of flow is measured accordingly.
Theoretically, you can make a water clock that depends on the flow of water out of the base of a container, or on the evaporation of water.
