Hello Friend.....☺
This is a very interesting behaviour that takes place at the surface of liquids. Surface tension is responsible for the spherical shape of liquid droplets, as long as we don't apply other forces.. These droplets can easily be deformed.. Why is this so? , can be explained like…….
We hang wet clothes on a rope for drying up. More & more clothes on single rope, it goes on sagging. To hang clothes with less sag , we need to stretch the rope ie we need to apply more tension to the rope. And to avoid more stretch or tension, we may reduce the length of the rope. In that condition , we need to stretch less. And we'll have to apply less Surface tension( force/unit length for pulling the surface back without any sag) So reducing the length of the rope is the solution to that.
Here , hanging clothes is like gravity applied & the rope is the film of water surface, SO, this is the natural tendency of water molecules to stick together to cut short the length means in other words to reduce the area to the minimum. For reducing the area, water molecules are rolled or pulled into a spherical shape by the cohesive forces of the surface layer. so that surface tension applied against gravity can minimize…
