Water-holding capacityis controlled primarily by soiltexture and organic matter. Soilswith smaller particles (silt and clay) have a larger surface area than those with larger sand particles, and a large surface area allows a soil to hold more water."

Water holding capacity of soil is basically the maximum amount of water that the a particular amount of soil can hold depending totally on the texture and organic matter of the soil.
Soil moisture content is the amount of moisture retained by the soil naturally, more is the moisture content of the soil less is it's probablity of leeching and loss of fertility.
