The leaves of free-floating water hyacinths contains aerenchyma (parenchymatous tissues which are hollow and filled with air to provide the leaves of free-floating water hyacinths buoyancy). Water hyacinths are the only large aquatic herb that can float on the water unattached to the bottom. They also float on bloated air-filled hollow leaf stalks secondarily.
