Answer:

Explanation:

Ganga the holy river has utmost importance among all the rivers in India. River Ganga emanates from the Himalaya and merges into the Bay of Bengal. The water of river has been called as ‘water of immortality’ due to its extraordinary quality. Hindu believe that the Ganga water has healing power, it removes skin diseases and elongates life. Even during the British Rule, The British East India Co. used only Ganga water on its ships during the three-month journey back to England, because it stayed “sweet and fresh.”

To know the scientific reasons behind the purity of Ganga first time in 1896 British bacteriologist Ernst Hankin demonstrated antibacterial properties of the Ganga against Vibrio cholera bacteria and claimed there is an antibacterial factor responsible for purity of the Ganga water. What he means here is the factor is capable of killing bacteria in collected samples. In 1917 French microbiologist D’Herelle named that factor bacteriophage. In further future studies bacteriophages were found even at the origin of the river Ganga which known as Gaumukh.

Later scientists and microbiologists collected the samples from different rivers of India like Yamuna, Narmada and Ganga. As a part of an assessment Escherichia, Enterobacter, Salmonella, Shigella and Vibrio like pathogenic bacteria were isolated from these rivers and their numbers were compared with the bacteriophages present in the river water. It is found out that numbers of bacteriophage in Ganga is more than 3 times than the other rivers, and that makes the Ganga more unique, antibacterial and therapeutic. In upper Himalayan stretches the number of bacteriophages are much more. Hence scientifically it is confirmed that purity of the Ganga is due to bacteriophages.

During past few decades there has been immense transformation in the aquatic environment of the river Ganga. Advancement of the human civilization has posed serious threat to the river. Disposal of heavy metals, opening of sewage system, dead bodies immersion into the river and other human activities have made the situation such worst that the river water is not safe for drinking and other purposes. Recent research has been carried out on Ganga revealed that there is significant decrease in the number bacteriophages. Ganga is no more safe. There is a prompt need for such actions which can revive the river otherwise Ganga will be dead.
