the constituents or elements participating in a mixture exhibit their own properties individually while those in a compound does not exhibit the same properties.

eg within the given substance(water):              

H and O are gases that combine to form water(liquid).

here the properties of the gases to be in its own form at the room temperature drastically changes.

This is one of the way in which water is proved to be a compound.
