Water is considered as a compound of hydrogen and oxygen and is not a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen because of the following reasons:

  • Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom are joined or combined to form one molecule of water. Mixing them will not form water.
  • Properties of water are very different as compared to hydrogen and oxygen properties.
  • Water cannot be separated into hydrogen and oxygen again by any physical method but can be separated by the electrolysis process.
