Hello! ! !
Hey dear here is your answer _________
☆ When water freezes, water molecules form a crystalline structure maintained by hydrogen bonding.
☆ Solid water, or ice, is less dense than liquid water.
☆ Ice is less dense than water because the orientation of hydrogen bonds causes molecules to push farther apart, which lowers the density.
☆ This "hydrogen bond" essentially restricts the water molecules ability to form the tight crystaline structure found in most solids (it creates what's known as hexagonal lattice which contains an area of open space within the solid) this leaves ice closely compacted thus less dense than liquid water , density differences cause ice to float on water as others have noted.
☆ Hydrogen bonding also explains the abnormally high boiling point of liquid water.
