Water is an element and not a compound as it is homogeneous and has two elements hydrogen and oxygen which combine to form water in a definite ratio of 1:8 by mass.

Hydrogen is a gas and is inflammable.Oxygen is also a gas and is a supporter of combustion.But water acts as a fire extinguisher.This property of water also proves that water is a compound.
