Pure or distilled water is not used for drinking because it has a very high solubility. Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of distilled water is bad idea. Water filtered through reverse osmosis tends to be neutral & is acceptable for regular use provided minerals are supplemented.

Seawater is forced through a semipermeable membrane that separates salt from water. Because the technology typically requires less energy than thermal distillation, most new plants, like Tampa's, now use reverse osmosis. There are environmental costs of desalination, as well.
