Water near the bed of a deep river is quiet while that near the surface flows. Give reasons.

  • As the stress given to a liquid makes it to move, the quantity of stress applied determines the motion between the layers of a liquid.
  • As the river bed is made of static solid mud, the layer of the liquid closer to the mud also remains calm without any motion.  
  • But the layers at the top of the river are less static as the water layers below them are not static as mud layer and hence the water at the surface flows.
