EPA provides various resources to locate information on water pollution and how it has affected the animal populations living in these habitats:
EPA uses water quality and biological criteria to evaluate water quality and ecosystem health. The presence, condition and numbers of types of fish, insects, algae, plants, and other organisms provide important information about the health of aquatic ecosystems. The presence of toxics or other pollutants in water can affect aquatic life. Both types of criteria help scientists and regulators evaluate aquatic ecosystem health.

BOD is the initial result of water pollution.
Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) which directly refers to decreased amount of dissolved oxygen in an aquatic system. Discharge of sewage into water body is one of the prominent reason for the increase in BOD of an aquatic environment.
A certain amount of dissolved oxygen is required for every aquatic organism to survive in the aquatic ecosystem. If the BOD increases it will result in the suffocation of many fishes in the environment and bring an ecosystem imbalance.
