Water is not a good solvent for gas chromatography. It does not interact well with the stationary phases used for GC analysis. Therefore carrier gases are used in GC to move the solutes through the column.
Helium, hydrogen and nitrogen are the most widely used carrier gases. Nitrogen is efficiency but extremely slow. Helium is also good and efficiency but expensive. Hydrogen is the best choice as it provides the fastest analysis and due to its diffusivity. All safety measures must be in place.
