Alternative sources of energy are also known as non-conventional sources of energy which can be recycled or renewed. They are categorised into four types :
(i) Solar Energy
- It is the most widely available and non-exhaustible source of energy.
- It can be trapped using solar collectors and photovoltaic cells.
- In many countries it is being used for cooking and heating purposes.
- Japan, France, Germany and . India are producing this energy.
(ii) Wind Energy
- Wind power has propelled ships as well as driven wind mills to grind grain or pump water.
- Recently wind has been used to generate electricity also.
- The potential for wind energy is tremendous. France and Netherlands have developed this energy.
(iii) Geothermal
- It is the useful conversion of natural energy heat from the interior of the earth to heat buildings and general electricity,
- This energy is developed in Iceland, Italy and United States.
(iv) Hydroelectricity
- The force of falling water is used for generating electricity. It is called hydroelectricity.
- By using turbines, water power has been successfully harnessed which provides power to grain mills, saw mills and other machineries.
- USA, Sweden and Switzerland have developed this energy.
