Now that the dual nature of light as "both a particle and a wave" has been proved, its essential theory was further evolved from electromagnetics into quantum mechanics. Einstein believed light is a particle (photon) and the flow of photons is a wave.

=> It is a discrete unit of matter, having among others, the attribute of mass. 

Wave:
=> It is a discrete unit or energy, usually referred to as wave number, having among others the attribute of frequency.

So if we apply this understanding we start to get a glimpse of the wave-particle duality of all matter, which can behave as a particle or as a wave, depending on the vantage point of an observer.
