Sound waves are used in SONAR. Not just any sound wave, but Ultrasonic waves (waves having frequency of greater than 20,000 Hz) are used. Ultrasonic waves have the property that they don't bend much, making them penetrate through a medium more easily than ordinary sound waves, required for several applications like in measurement of the depth of a sea.
