This is so because the earth is mostly covered with saline water which is unfit for use of humans. Also most of fresh water is in the form of glaciers and frozen ice in ice caps. remaining fresh water is in groundwater Reserves. and only a very small percent is present in rivers, lakes and other water bodies.
