Soils are claassified in a variety of different ways, but the highest humus contents are found in what we would refer to as a histosol in the US soil taxonomy. These are wetland soils that build up organic matter over long periods of time, as materials decay much more slowly in the saturated conditions. If the soils are drained, the organic matter quickly begins to decay, releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide (contributing to climate change) and causing the land surface to sink down.
