We all know that alpha particles are nucleus of a helium atom
Rutherford used alpha particles in his alpha ray scattering experiment.
But only after the experiment only he bring out the idea of nucleus.
I am tottaly confused !!

Answer:

In 1909 Rutherford disproved Sir J.J.Thomas Because only very few of the alpha particles in his beam were scattered by large angles after striking the gold foil while most passed completely through, Rutherford knew that the gold atom's mass must be concentrated in a tiny dense nucleus

In his gold foil experiment Rutherford observed that most of the alpha particles which are positively charged particles went straight through the foil without any deflection so he concluded that most of the space in the atom is relatively empty.Few alpha particles deflected by large angles with a 180 0 made him conclude that mass and positive charge is concentrated at the centre of the atom.
