A commonly heard assertion is that “We are doing enough because there are so many campaigns to advocate for conserving our environment”. No doubt it is true that the nations are playing their roles working corporately to save our earth. Many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have came up with proposals to ensure that the public is more informed about the environmental degradation as well as to create an easier platform for them to get on board to save the world. Earth Day Network’s mission is to diversify and broaden the environmental movement worldwide and to mobilize it as the most efficient vehicle to build a healthy and sustainable environment to address climate change and protect the earth for future generations. Many citizens have also taken part and donated to help them to carry out their cause to protect the earth. This allows the different campaign holders to use the funds donated to aid their resources and manpower needs. Hence many people say that we are doing enough to conserve our environment. To say that we are trying to help the environment is one thing, but whether or not we are doing so enough is another. Doing enough means that our efforts put into saving the environment is adequate and sufficient, nothing more needs to be done. Is that the case though?
On the other hand, we are not only not doing enough, but in fact contributing to destruct our environment. Unfortunately, many of us are pretty wasteful. In the 19th Century, global waste production rose by tenfold and is predicted to double again by 2025. Huge amounts of plastic now roam the oceans, where it threatens the marine life by blocking out sunlight and oxygen they need for their survival. This stems out from our daily lives of littering rubbish, using that unnecessary straw, having that hour long warm bath. We produce rubbish more than any other pollutants. Similarly, governments also play a huge role in conserving our environment as they have the right to deforest to build more infrastructure and buildings. A tree takes a lot of time to grow – decades – but it only takes a few minutes to cut them down. Instead of letting them grow and allowing the trees to provide us with oxygen, we so readily cut them down to make way for more roads and business districts that would boost our economy. Thus forgetting the importance to preserve this environment that was given to us wholly. We are definitely not putting in sufficient effort to save our environment as there is much more that we could do.
In the same vein, many of us prefer convenience and comfort to environmental sustainability. We live in a culture that demands and worship convenience therefore, maybe to a certain extent it is not entirely our fault that we respond this way. Unfortunately, going the quick and easy way means being inconsiderate towards the environment. The creation of plastic bags-they were designed to be disposable. Even around at home, most people choose convenience over the environment on a daily basis. How often do we use the dryer rather than wait for our hair to dry? How often do drive rather than choosing to walk or cycle to our destination? How often do we select standard products, over environmentally friendly cleaning products in the supermarket which are slightly more expensive? More than half of us, I would confidently say, choose the former. This is because of the culture of convenience that have been built around us which have taught us to choose the easy way out. Therefore, however can we say that we are doing enough when we are not giving our best to commit to conserving our planet? Being kind to the environment is not always convenient, but it is worthwhile.
Furthermore, with the rise of the internet and new media, people are getting more connected to one another, however, are also more passive in their actions. We are now able to see what other people are coming up with and doing for the environment. However, we also begin to just like and comment on the posts rather than actually taking part in said activity to save our environment. We choose to be behind a screen, thinking that other people will do their part to conserve the environment instead. If we do not even bother to take a step out of our comfort zone to help our environment, we are not doing ample to preserve our environment.
In conclusion, every minute of attention on saving our environment is imperative as keeping our environment healthy is a pressing matter. We are not just doing this for ourselves, but for the future generations to come as well. When we truly go all out to preserve our planet, that is when we can say that we are doing enough for our environment.
