we are well off but what use of the money if i cannot be independent. explain this line?

these lines were said by grandmother in the chapter how I thought my grandmother to read. she wanted to say that money can't buy everything..
as she is illiterate, she wanted to study
money can't help her without studying....and she would depend on others for reading and writing......
