Air is gaseous. Therefore, the particles of air have a large intermolecular soace among themselves. On the other hand, a block of wood is solid, therefore the particles have less intermolecular spaces.

The particles of air have least amount of attraction between them. This, one can easily move the hand in air and push the particles of air apart. However, the particles of solid have Maximum amount of attraction between them. A greater amount of force is required to move the particles of solid apart, This, a much greater force is required to move hand through a solid block of wood.....
hope it will help you -------!!!!!!
