The narrator was very surprised to see the boys polishing shoes because they were too small to work , and that too on streets . Day before that day narrator also found them selling wild strawberries on the skirts of Verona . Narrator had a very sympathetic feel   for the two boys and wish to help them financially but they disagree . As , the two boys wish to work and support themselves of their own .
