We have 25% solution and a 50% solution of a chemical. How do we mix them to prepare 100 gallons of 40% solution?

Answer:

Gallons of .25 = N

Gallons of .50 = M

.25 N + .5 M = .4 (N + M)

.1 M = .15 N

M + N = 100

.1 * (100 - N) = .15 N

10 = .25 N

So N = 40   and M = 60
