When Franz was not able to answer what M.Hamel had asked him about his French classes. Franz felt very ashamed and embarrassed not to be able to answer the question he was asked to. In reply, M.Hamel consoled him by saying such a line. He added that the day which had come in their life was the product of everyone's ignorance. He said that every citizen is to be blamed for such a condition to approach in their life.

From this it can be concluded that for M. Hamel his love for his country and his language was more than anything in the world.
