We have explored how gender norms are revealed in and perpetuated by language and by our nation's relationship with race. In today's lesson, we will examine the role that commercialism plays in gender roles and the establishment of norms. Commercialism is the creation of products with the intent of maximizing profit. Commercialism is based on supply and demand: that is, how much of a product is available, and how many people want that product.
Even though we may proclaim that we are individuals who make our own choices, the choices we make are often guided by corporations who depend on us for profit. If they can predict what we will like and why, they can provide more of those things and make more money.
What do you notice about the orange sentences in this mini-lesson, keeping in mind the clauses that we've covered so far?
