Many buildings are made out of glass on the outside. Their special reflecting glass properties which reflects light and keep the building cool.

Here are a few names and compositions of these glasses and how they are helpful in saving energy as well as cooling the building:

1. Toned glass: This type of glass acts like ‘sunglasses’ against the glare and also reduces the heat entering a home.

They are made by small additions of metal oxide to rolled or float glass composition.

2. Low E glass: This glass has a transparent and low emissivity coating that reflects out heat.

It has a composition including SiO2, AI2O3 (aluminum oxide or alumina), CaO (calcium oxide or lime) and MgO (magnesium oxide or magnesia),

3. Insulated glazing units:These are commonly known as ‘double-glazing’, where two pieces of glass are used with a gap in the middle, which can be filled with air or gas to provide the ultimate glazing solution.

It is used with low E glass for greater insulation and toned glass for windows that face the summer sun.
