We have to increase the four in increasing order of acidic strength -
CH3
|
i) CH3-CH2-CH2-COOH ii)CH3-CH-COOH iii)CH3-CH2-COOH iv) CH2=CH-COOH
I have no query regarding (ii) and (iv). But would you please say which one will be more acidic between (i) and (iii). Please explain a little

Answer:

THE 2 AND 3 RD ONE ARE SAME COMPOUNDS I GUESS

Explanation:

AMONG I AND II ie BUTANOIC ACID AND PROPANOIC ACID . PROPANOIC ACID WILL BE STRONG . THIS IS DUE TO +I EFFECT OF CARBON CHAIN

THE CARBON CHAIN PUSHES ELECTRON TO -COOH . SO AS LENGTH OF CARBON CHAIN INCREASES THE ELECTRON DENSITY GETS MORE AND MORE INCREASED. FOR ACIDIC BEHAVIOUR H⁺ SHOULD THE LEFT FROM -COOH ( hydrogen gives its electron and leaves as H⁺ ) THIS WILL HAPPEN EASILY IF ELECTRON DENSITY AROUND - COOH IS LESS H CAN EASILY GIVE ITS ELECTRON AND LEAVE AS H⁺ . SINCE DUE TO HIGHER +I EFFECT OF BUTANOIC ACID ELECTRON DENSITY AROUND ITS -COOH WILL BE HIGHER WHEN COMPARED TO -COOH OF BUTANOIC ACID. AND THEREFORE H⁺ CAN BE LIBERATED FROM BUTANOIC ACID EASILY WHEN COMPARED TO THAT OF PROPANOIC ACID
