We hear and read about female foeticide, which is really a wrong practice. In some families be it rural or urban, females are tortured for giving birth to a girl child. They do not seem to understand the scientific reason behind the birth of a girl. a) in your opinion is the approach of the society towards mother in this regard correct? Explain the scientific reason. b) How can you promote awareness among people?

A) The approach of the society is undoubtedly wrong. We, as educated citizens should understand the science behind gender determination of an unborn baby, rather than blaming mothers, who actually have no role in this.

Male humans have XY chromosomes, and females have XX chromosomes.
Crossing over this, we get, either XX or XY, so the chances of getting a boy or a girl are 50-50. And as we can see, the female parent has homozygous chromosomes, so she can donate only the X one, but a male parent has heterozygous chromosomes, so he can donate, either X or Y, which makes him responsible for the sex of the unborn child, and not the mother, as the wrong preconception says.

B)  Educating people plays a big roles in creating awareness. Even if by any reason, some of the relatives, neighbours or anybody, are not aware of this reason, they should be educated of the same by those who know the reason.

Media also plays a big role in creating awareness among people. Newspapers, radio, news channels can be used for creating awareness on this issue.

Our teachers, schools also can help us in by making their students aware, and in turn who can create awareness among their homes and surroundings.

(i) In my opinion the above approach of society is baseless. Sex of child is determined by type of chromosome present in sperm (X or Y) that fuses with ovum at the time of fertilisation.

(ii) By organising poster making, debates and seminars.

(iii) Spreading social awareness against various social malaise viz. gender inequality, female foeticide, etc.
