We know that plants need oxygen for respiration. But, why do they need oxygen and not carbon dioxide, especially when they use the latter for photosynthesis?

plants need oxygen as well as carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. They require much amount of carbon dioxide and a few amount Of oxygen.

Respiration is a common process undertaken by all. In aerobic respiration the needs remain the same, oxygen, as oxygen helps us oxidize the food to release energy.

The same is the case with plants. They too use photosynthesis to produce food but the food needs to be oxidized as well which cannot be done by carbon dioxide.
