we live on earth so doesn't that mean that we are already in space?

YES , We are already in space as Earth is part of space. But we are not in Outer Space of Earth ( Space is also used generally for that )

Explanation:

Space is the boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events have relative position and direction

Whole universe is Space , & Earth is part of Universe

So Ofcourse we are  with in Space

What generally when we talk about space , we actually talk about

earth outer space   (we just say Space)

and  Outer space is  the area beyond the limit of the atmosphere of Earth

The farther you get from Earth, the more it is considered outer space
