Robert Clive of The (British) East India Company
Explanation:
- Mir Jafar was made a Nawab after the defeat at Plassey after Sirauddaulah was defeated and assassinated. After the Plassey defeat, the Company, however, was not yet ready to assume the management.
- The main goal was to improve trade. If this could be done without the assistance of state governors who are able to offer rights without invasion, the territory will not be taken over directly. Soon, the company considered it to be very challenging. Even the puppet was not always so helpful as the company wanted.
- However, the Nawabs were offering less money & the Company needed more money. The Nawab had to pay Rs. 500,000 a month, but for the finance of its wars the company required more capital & more land and revenue to meet economic demands and other expenses.
- Hence, after the death of Mir Jafar, the corporation took over directly from the administration of Robert Clive and had had declared that they should "become Nawab themselves"
