According to law of conservation of mass , the total mass of reactants is equal to total mass of products (slight variation might arise due to experimental error) .
Therefore , the number of atoms of each reactant should be equal to number of that element in the product .
for example -
2H2O→2H2+O2
In the above example , the no. of hydrogen atoms on both sides is equal and similarly no. of oxygen atoms is equal on both the sides .
If you don't balance an equation , such equations are called skeletal equations .
