It is quite true mind is a restless bird; the more it gets the more it wants and still remains unsatisfied. Only an untrained mind behaves greedily. The characteristics of an untrained mind are selfishness, greed, jealousy, hatred, anger, etc.
If one does not purify one’s mind through abstinence, meditation, and consecration to God, one remains trapped in the vices of materialism. In such a condition the more one gets, the more one hanker after. Even all the treasures of the universe can’t satisfy that person. It is a vice. And unfortunately a majority of men and women suffer from this vice.
In order to save one self from this vice, one must practice self-control. Through mediation and reflection one must learn to be content and live according to the spiritual laws of life.
This extract has been taken from Gandhijee's essay ''Indian civilization and culture' where he says that main is a restless bird because the more it gets the more it want it wants , and still remains unsatisfied. The more we indulge in our indugences because happiness is largely a mental condition which does not depend upon whether one is rich or poor.
