We often come across inspiring stories and anecdotes in newspapers that do not fit the bill of a news
item or a report on a current issue. What do you think the editor is trying to achieve by allowing to
incorporate such a story in his daily newspaper?

Besides news items and reports, a newspaper carries interesting write-ups that are not in any way connected to the news. There are many reasons for this.
1. The foremost reason is to ensure that the human interest value of the newspaper remains intact. Since human interest includes articles that are humourous and heartwarming, it becomes important to include such articles in the dailies.
2. Additionally, such write-ups help change the reader's mood and take them from the serious and factual to happier content. These stories are clearly demarcated from the regular reports and are typically found in a special section of the newspaper, which is usually on the editorial page or in supplemental pull-outs that come with the newspaper.
3. Further, it is with such stories that newspapers can hope to cater to a wide range of readers, with different interests. Therefore, newspapers use such stories to connect with history buffs, ex-army officers, the spiritually inclined and other such categories of people.
