It is an extremely unreactive metal, so unlike most other metals (iron, aluminium, copper, even silver) it takes a long time to develop even a slight tarnish. This means that its bright colour and shine stay looking good for years and it doesn’t discolour in contact with moisture etc. Plus, this also means it does not have to be plated in itself, and can be used to plate other metals which do tarnish.

We prefer gold jewelry over any other forms of jewelry because gold is an extremely inert metal and it doesn't get corroded on contact with salt, water, moisture or air and moreover it has a shiny appearance in it. Hence because of its shiny appearance it will stay shiny for a long period of time and hence it is used as a metal for jewelry. It is also used to protect other metal and give it a brighter looks and prevent from tarnishing.
