The black porous substance is humus. It is rich in nutrients, water and minerals needed for plants growth. It nourishes the plant and make the plant healthier.

there are many tiny pores in charcoal so once applied to soil the pores will allow air to diffuse into the soil . Plants roots need air to breathe and in meanwhile the tiny pores will hold water and nutrients and later supply it to the plants
