Yours is a very fine question, and thought-provoking. I had to search my memory banks…all the way back until my childhood years…Believe me, that was quite a lengthy search.

I recall being a young boy, raised in a Christian family, attending Sunday school, and eventually church. I learned well, the preaching, “Do good to one another. Help one another. Love one another.”

Obediently, I sought to follow biblical teachings. I did help other folks…in all manner of ways…and, I experienced no gratitude at helping. I felt no satisfaction at helping. I certainly felt no “warm and fuzzy” feelings at helping. I discovered I had a problem in my theology.

I was attempting to sort of doing things…out of order, or backwards. I was sort of like…placing the cart in front of the horse…and, wondering why I wasn’t getting anywhere.

I was doing helpful things…because I was TAUGHT to do helpful things. I wasn’t doing helpful things…because I WANTED to.

I was missing an important step…a vital step in my theology. I didn’t love people. I was afraid of them. I didn’t love myself. I hated myself.

When I finally got my priorities straight, when I finally got my thoughts in line, when I finally addressed my emotional issues…things changed. I began to love.

I began to love myself. I began to love other people…not SOME people…ALL people.

Then, I learned…as a simple byproduct OF loving people…I WANTED to help them. I was almost desperate to help folks who really NEEDED help.

At first, I felt badly, because I could do so little to help…and, the need was so great. And, then, I recalled the life of Dr. Albert Schweitzer.

The good doctor opened a medical clinic on the African continent. Receiving no pay, he began addressing the medical needs of the people. Naturally, as this behavior was SO very atypical of human beings…his activities became noticed.

An exasperated reporter asked him, “With so many millions of people dying of starvation, and medical neglect…what possible good do you think you can do?”

Dr. Schweitzer simply smiled and calmly replied, “Why, I can HELP them…one person, at a time.”

Once I got all my theological ducks lined up in a row…I was content…to help WHO I could…WHEN I could…and, to the best of my ability. No one can expect more from a person…than their best. Even YOU have no right to ask of yourself…more than your best.

So, it is one of my daily goals…to help as many as I can, and in any way that I can. I love helping people…simply because I love people.
