People who do not own their stuff are always but always the problem. Most especially those with little love in them for themselves or anyone else. Its important to remember they are not monsters even if they behave monstrously. They are in great pain, seriously lost & broken. Being compassionate is key even if they won’t accept it. Otherwise you just pour gasoline on a fire in the name of putting it out. The aphorism in bold below says it all.
This is a good generalization of what you ought to be and/or avoid culled from other answers I’ve given that considerably clarify:
Understanding morality is no kind of social & psychological construct is crucial. It is an outgrowth of our biological capacity for empathy. Out of which Love emerges that we exercise, because we are also intrinsically social creatures. Everything important in the most practical terms, is mostly composed of Love - Integrity, dedication, authentic sincerity, honesty (especially with oneself), courage, honour etc. & must be a component of everything done or its worthless. Emotional intelligence & empathy are just a form of this & the inevitable reason why they are the best predictor of all levels of success & prosperity in life.
The meaning of life comes down to but one thing - To Learn. What if you had a magic genie who could give you anything you wanted, instantly & always. How long before life lost all allure & vitality such that it was no longer worth living? Exactly. Obstacles are placed in our way for a reason (the meaning of life thing).
Remember the engine that drives all of everything in your life - What feelings you focus on expands. What you then expand, attract & magnetize is up to you.
The most powerful intellectual characteristic that either makes us better or worse than any other life forms is the imagination. Using your creativity with absolute passion to see the beauty in everything & everyone in life & finding creative ways to be thankful for it will positively reprogram you & get you to where you want to go.
People who've developed emotional responses reflected in negative action too consistently, that do not reflect who you really are & aspire to be (even if they haven't admitted it) are always miserable at their core, even if they feel momentary glee, authentic joy is beyond them as they try & fill a hole that cannot be with the negativity they pursue. These are is neural pathways encoded with these responses that now have to be rewritten. It can be done but applying yourself is now called for. Introspection & self awareness are nonnegotiable. Its like rolling a ball uphill, letting it roll down is not an option, the upside being it gets easier & allows you to face all future challenges with a strength & wisdom you hardly knew you possessed.
One of the world's most respected neuroscientists, V.S. Ramachandran summed up the issue nicely: “Our mental life is governed mainly by a cauldron of emotions, motives and desires which we are barely conscious of, and what we call our conscious life is usually an elaborate post-hoc rationalization of things we really do for other reasons”.
Everything profound (deepest intelligence, genius, all feeling both intuitive & emotional, creativity etc) derives from the unconscious. We often don’t take responsibility for all that entails. The principle underlying all psychological health is paying attention to all emotions as they come up. Before or after the fact in our self or others. This is not commonly accepted practice. This is completely the reason why the world Health Organization & other respected authorities have stated one in four people will have a major mental disorder in their life (from which they will recover from or not top various degrees). The totality of what you’ve brought up is at a minimum breathtaking. Being part of the solution & not the problem of all the ugliness in the world starts be each of us applying this - right now. Regular meditation will accelerate all good as well.
