We take a glass tumbler and place a thick square card on its mouth as shown in Figure (a). A coin is then placed above this card in the middle. Let us flick the card hard with our f ingers. On flicking, the card moves away but the coin drops into the glass tumbler [see Figure (b)]. a) Give reason for the above observation. b) State the law involved in this case

THE LAW INVOLVED IS :

  • Inertia of Rest for the coin.

Initially, the card and the coin were both in a state of rest. Now when we flicker the card, the card experiences a force and changes the state of rest into motion and moves away.

But the coin is still is in rest as it didn't experience any force (force was given on the card and not coin). This is in accordance to NEWTON'S 1ST LAW OF MOTION.

The coin continued to stay at rest even when the card moved away and fell down into the glass due to gravity.
