The chapter "We too are human beings" highlights the plight of marginalised communities in India. The narrator Bama, first witnessed untouchability when she was in third grade. She saw a elder from her street holding a small bag with a string in a peculiar manner. Seeing such a big man hold a small packet like that made her want to double up and laugh. She narrator this episode to her brother in great comic detail, who then explained to her that people believed that they were unpure and polluted. Her brother said the only way to get rid of these indignities was to study and become learned in life.
