We wish to identify the presence of two isotopes of Ar in a gaseous mixture.

Masses:

m (36Ar) = 6.01 x 10-26 kg

m (40Ar) = 6.67 x 10-26 kg

Singly-charged Ar ions are accelerated to a across a potential difference, and the velocity of the ions is 2.0 x 105 m/s after passing through the velocity selector. The ions then enter the mass spectrometer. Both the velocity selector and mass spectrometer have a uniform magnetic field of 1.50 T pointing into of the plane.

(a) Find the electric field (magnitude and direction) in the velocity selector.

(b) Find the radii the circular paths of the two isotopes.

r (36Ar) = ___

r (40Ar) = ___

(d) What is its speed of the ions just before they hit the detector?

Note: Magnetic field points inwards
