Because the weight =mass*acceleration due to gravity

    W= m*g

And the acceleration due to gravity is more at equator and less at the polar region.

Weight of a body is lesser at the equator and greater at the polar region because the gravity is maximum at the poles and as we move toward the centre, the gravity decreases.
