The Peripheral Nervous System and the Central Nervouys System: The Main Divisions of the Nervous System

The nervous system, like the digestive system, the respiratory (breathing) system, etc., is one of the organ systems of the body. Figure 3 is a diagram that summarizes its major parts.

Figure 1 shows the two major divisions of the nervous system:

the central nervous system (CNS),. The CNS is the basis, as far as anyone can tell, of all mental and behavioral activity. It contains >99% of all the neurons (~nerve cells) and consists of:
the brain in the skull, which carries out the higher, more complex mental and behavioral activities.
the spinal cord running down the middle of the vertebral column ("backbone"), which carries out the simpler levels of behavioral organization.
the peripheral nervous system (PNS) gets all information into the brain (and therefore to the mind) and controls directly all responses you make. It consists of the nerves going to and from the central nervous system. A nerve is a bundle of axons, the part of a neuron (nerve cell) that is specialized for communication. The PNS The PNS:
connects the senses (hearing, touch, etc.) to the CNS
connects the CNS to the muscles and glands

CNS

The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. It is referred to as "central" because it combines information from the entire body and coordinates activity across the whole organism.

The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord.

The brain is protected by the skull (the cranial cavity) and the spinal cord travels from the back of the brain, down the center of the spine, stopping in the lumbar region of the lower back.

The brain and spinal cord are both housed within a protective triple-layered membrane called the meninges.

The central nervous system has been thoroughly studied by anatomists and physiologists, but it still holds many secrets; it controls our thoughts, movements, emotions, and desires. It also controls our breathing, heart rate, the release of some hormones, body temperature, and much more.

Medical Definition of Nervous system, peripheral (PNS)

Nervous system, peripheral (PNS): That portion of the nervous system that is outside the brain and spinal cord.

The peripheral nervous system  (PNS) is one of the two major divisions of the nervous system. The other is the central nervous system  (CNS) which is made up of the brain and spinal cord.

The nerves in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) connect the central nervous system (CNS) to sensory organs (such as the eye and ear), other organs of the body, muscles, blood vessels and glands.

The peripheral nerves include the 12 cranial nerves, the spinal nerves and roots, and what are called the autonomic nerves. The autonomic nerves are concerned with automatic functions of the body. Specifically, autonomic nerves are involved with the regulation of the heart muscle, the tiny muscles lining the walls of blood vessels, and glands.
